Nerd Article

WARNING: Most of the time I write my articles aimed at topics and ideas that are directed for a homeowner, business owner, or property manager. The articles discuss some easily applicable, or at least palatable topic that may be useful or helpful for an energy plan within the near future. This is not one of those articles…

Today’s topic is Microbial Fuel Cells.

What the what?

Yes you read correctly, microbial fuel cells (MFC). MFCs are systems designed to take a living organism and generate an electrical current from its natural metabolism. For those of you around my age, you may be thinking of the scene from the Matrix. That’s exactly the idea.

However, instead of using human, scientists are trying to design useful microbial fuel cells that run off of bacteria processes. And, to make the matter even more appealing, many scientists are looking to use bacteria (or algae) that run off of wastewater or other trash in order to generate the electricity from, what otherwise, would be discarded.

But how would such a system work?

Well, I could do some hand waving and just say that the bacteria, when it is ‘digesting’ its food create a chemical that establishes an energy gradient. This gradient is then channeled into a current, and voila, you have electricity. However, let’s get into a bit more detail.

So, imagine we have a container and on the left is a liquid substrate rich with bacteria and on the right is an oxygen rich solution. Connecting these two halves are an electrical wire, with an anode in the bacteria side and a cathode in the oxygen side.

Now, imagine that the bacteria has to undergo anaerobic respiration in order to process its food source. This anaerobic condition is simulated by depriving the bacteria side of the MFC from oxygen. In order to finish the metabolic cycle, the bacteria must transfer an electron from the Anode. This, coupled with the voltage difference between the canoed and the cathode, causes electricity to be generated within the MFC.

Now, let’s be realistic for one moment, MFCs are far from ideal systems at the time being. In fact, one might even say that the current state of MFC implementation is infantile. The MFC systems running are poorly regulated (from an electronical perspective) and to make matters worse are still struggling to find a viable species off which to run.

These are by no means insurmountable issues, however. A similar thing could have been said for the state of bioremediation within pollution zone not too long ago. However, from a combination of active research and incentive (driven by super fund money), bioremediation has drastically improved from an efficacy perspective.

In the case of MFCs, it is really a market changer. Of course MFCs are not adequate at this time to cope with all of the energy needs that a developed nation requires. Just from an energy balance standpoint, there is not enough material for us to power the grid we do with MFCs. With that said, MFCs do provide a glimpse into a system that could be more energy efficient.

For instance, our wastewater treatment facilities at present use A LOT of energy to just pump the water and treat it. This energy could, in theory, be self-powered by the tactical implementation of MFCs within the wastewater treatment process. Much of the nutrients necessary for bacteria to thrive could come from the wastewater plants. Similar approaches could be done at landfills and compost sites.

Not to mention, the process of MFCs does not lend itself to methane generation and the potential methane escape that convention landfill WTE methods rely upon.

An Eager Buyer

Syncrude Canada Ltd. Ever heard of them? Well, if you have been following the presidential race at all, you should have.

Syncrude is a joint venture firm established in Fort McMurray Alberta, Canada. The firm specializes in the production of oil and gas, specifically from the Athabasca oil sands region. The joint venture is a cooperative effort between seven partners. These include Canadian Oil Sands Limited, Imperial Oil, Suncor Energy, Sinopec, Nexen, Mocal, and Murphy Oil.

Now, with all that blah blah blah aside, what does Syncrude have to do with anything I wuld want to write about?

Well, here is how it breaks down:

Syncrude is the first company to establish, drill, process, and refine oil from the Athabasca and Alberta oil sands region. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the oil sands, they are a heavy density form of petroleum that is (amazingly) difficult to transport, process, and manage.

Syncrude, however, has been conducting business up in Canada with relative ease for a while now. They started drilling during the 1970s within the Alberta oil sands region and have had success within the area since. In fact, today they are posed be one of the largest producers of oil within North America, at least in the near future.

That is to say, depending upon how the U.S.’s energy plan goes.

You see, the Athabasca Oil Sands are a pivotal region in what has become known as the keystone XL pipeline debate. Now, we are all so familiar with this chat of the keystone XL, that for many of us it is nauseating at this point. However, it is worth pointing out that the keystone XL is by and large designed to transport oil from the tar sands. This oil is heavy, thick, and viscous. In fact, it is drastically different than transporting lighter crude petroleum in not only an infrastructure, but also an energy drain necessary.

So, the development of the keystone XL pipeline really plays a huge role in whether or not a company like Syncrude will prosper at home in the future…

Or does it?

You see, Syncrude recently sold some of its shares (more accurately ConocoPhillips sold some of its shares in Syncrude) to Sinopec. Sinopec is a Chinese (state run) oil company that has been invested in North America expansion for some time now (look at Chesapeake Energy’s history). Sinopec. This puts an interesting twist on what we thought was a North American bound story.

So, this big story that has become the keystone XL pipeline, whether or not the U.S. will ‘support’ North American energy development has been rendered almost a side-show. Now, with a new set of energy-hungry Chinese partners, Syncrude will undeniably have a market to sell to regardless of who is buying. After all, piping to Vancouver is far shorter than piping to the Gulf Coast.

Does this mean the U.S. and Canada’s trading partnership will decline with respect to energy? Perhaps. With a new, more accommodating trading partner, perhaps North American energy independence is something that the whole continent isn’t looking for?

Just a thought.

Floating the Ship

The Chinese Solar Industry, it’s not an easy nut to crack. Over the past couple of years, it’s been up and down, vilified and honored, cutting edge and budget. However, like it or not, the Chinese solar industry is a force to be reckoned with in the world of renewable energy.

Just two days ago, China GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd. Gained approval to implement a 310-MW project outside the city of Datong. This project represents the largest solar project ever in China. Not only is the scale breathtaking, but it also shows how China’s solar producers have been able to adapt to decreased sales in both Europe and the United States.

Sales have fallen for many Chinese manufacturers in recent history due to a couple of driving forces. First off, in the United States, public sentiment around Chinese solar goods (and really Chinese manufactured goods in general) has soured significantly. In the case of solar, many Chinese manufacturers were accused of what is known as ‘dumping’. Essentially, dumping is when one sells goods at prices too low for them to make any profit. The idea is that when you are dumping goods, you are losing money, however (hopefully) your competition is losing even more money. This practice, coupled with allegations of government subsidies for Chinese solar manufacturers, created a lethal practice that (effectively) did not allow domestic solar manufacturers to compete.

Was this actually the case? There are still investigations to determine how legitimate the claims of ‘dumping’ were with Chinese goods. However, at the very least the U.S. sentiment towards Chinese manufactured solar products is bleak to say the least.

With respect to Europe, China’s other dominant solar export partner; the credit crisis has crippled all large spending, especially in the areas of utilities. Usually for solar spending, the government is the primary purchaser of most of the goods.  With austerity plans strangling governments for cash, this leaves little room for the Chinese solar goods. Whether or not this is a wise move for the Euro-zone is a topic for economists (and politically charged speculators), but what it means for China solar is less of an export market.

As a consequence, one would think the Chinese solar industry would be in a bit of a pickle. But, if you don’t have a market abroad, at least you can cater to home. The Chinese government has lobbed up a number of juicy solar contracts that are making domestic Chinese solar firm’s mouth water. I mentioned one example earlier, but other contracts are being presented with similar scopes.

Are these contracts because China wants to ‘go green?’ Perhaps. I am not an analyst of the inner workings of China’s policy crafting; however, a far more likely conclusion is that China is bolstering domestic projects to help ride the tide of poor international markets. By keeping its solar industry afloat, China is (once again) protecting them and priming them for the international market. This will keep China an energy leader in the future (which is undoubtedly renewably intensive).

But, is China’s activities something to be ashamed of? Renewables are clearly a fledgling industry (when compared to petrol). The relatively lack of traction is not due to poor business (minus Solyndra and some other exceptions) but rather by a highly efficient and cheap competition market. When we all know that the supply is going to run out on some other types of energy, is there really anything wrong with bolstering renewables?

After all, it is unlikely that renewables will beat out oil anytime soon. All we have to do is position them so that they are better (from an economic standpoint) than coal. Hopefully a mix of pollution control fees and renewable incentives will provide the necessary economic potion. We shall see.

Great Science, Poor Planning

Replacing something old is often very trying. Whether it is that car you have held on to for 25 years, despite it costing more and more every year, or that shirt that hasn’t been popular since 1976, people just don’t like getting rid of things. Why is this?

First off, we have a sense of attachment to things of the past. There is a comfort, nostalgia, and a feeling of knowledge and control when we look at the items we’ve had for a while. Think of the hesitancy people had when moving from a typewriter to a computer (or for that matter a windows to a mac… too overt a plug?) People feel like they have mastered many items they’ve had for a while, and getting rid of them almost feels like losing a skill, or part of oneself.

Secondly, and probably most importantly, are the large capital cost. People don’t like shelling up big sums of money at any given time. It’s the same reason why people buy houses much larger than they can afford, and it’s the same reason why people prefer the low down payments on cars despite the inordinate interest rates associated with them. Why do you think we have an infrastructure in the U.S. predominantly from the 1950’s?

Why do you think our cars run off of gas?

We all know that gas is cheap, but we also all know that gas is limited. As we delay making the big capital investment right now to rid ourselves of our gasoline/ petroleum addictions, we are in effect signing a high-interest contract for the future.

So, when I hear about a renewable energy option that is cheap in the present and promises to be cheaper in the future, I perk up.

Recently, researchers at the University of Cambridge are figuring out how to create isolated hydrogen gas a cheaper cost point than previously thought. Check out the article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120823112927.htm.

Essentially, what the researchers did was substitute out the conventional platinum catalyst (something that encourages a reaction) with a much cheaper Cobalt catalyst. This allowed them to synthesize hydrogen gas at a much cheaper rate using atmospheric oxygen and conditions.

Cool? We’ve found a solution! Right?

WRONG!

Hydrogen gas is wonderful, and maybe one day, it could really do great things for the world’s energy infrastructure. It is clean, efficient, and light. It not only makes energy at a higher rate than conventional hydrocarbons, but it is also (in many ways) easier to ship, transport, and manipulate.

However, hydrogen gas energy infrastructure requires an entire new INFRASTRUCTURE. And, as we know, if there is anything people hate spending money on, it is large, capital intensive costs.

So, there comes a point where we have to wonder, does any of this science matter? No matter how efficient the hydrogen system gets, it still requires an entire energy system infrastructure overhaul to become implemented. Can we ever expect such an event with governments as ineffective (on the macro-scale) as the ones we have today?

I certainly don’t know. I do know that science will continue to impress, but until policy can match it, there’s little hope for the rest of us.

Energy Plans and Waving Hands

By Keith Heyde

What is in an energy plan? We hear all of this mumbo-jumbo as soon as election season rolls around. It seems as though every candidate has their own idea of what constitutes an energy plan. Romney wants this, Obama wants that, and lets not even start to think of what Ron Paul wants.

But what does an energy plan actually do? Can it really change the course of the market or the price of gasoline at the pump?

The short answer, is no. Energy plans that are intent on manipulating and harnessing oil commodities either from a price perspective or a trade perspective are simply doomed to fail. We hear a lot lately of how Romney wishes to establish “North American” energy independence. The idea is that if we rely on imports from Canada and Mexico more than imports across the globe, we will have a far more stable energy price.

However, this simply isn’t true. When we talk about importing oil from Canada, prices are not simply set on a U.S.-Canada exchange market. Of course there are discounts due to NAFTA and proximity agreements, but the oil prices from Canada are subject to global price fluxuations. This means that issues in Iran are still just as likely to cause oil price spikes as if we were to import oil directly. Sometimes, globalization has its downsides.

So what can plans actually do? Well, the government has invested a great deal of money into the development of renewable technology across the country lately. These investments not only help nurture a growing industry, but also appease public sentiment and provide a deal of energy stability.

I came across an interesting fact when I was watching a film called Carbon Nation last weekend. Essentially what it said was that despite the U.S.’s split opinions on anthropogenic global warming, close to 90% of people LIKE solar energy. I mean, I can’t blame them. Even if you don’t believe that we are causing the ice caps to melt, it makes sense to LIKE an energy source that (at least seems) free. I think part of the romance is the thought of liberating oneself from the grid and living out the American frontiersman dream, but with that said, it is astounding how much people like solar.

Interestingly, the numbers for wind energy are even higher.

Go figure.

So, in a country that genuinely “likes” renewable energy sources, why would we have an energy plan that is set on eliminating (or at least withdrawing crucial funding) from them. Sometimes it costs more to do the right thing. Perhaps that’s a lesson for a profit hungry businessman out there. After all, a couple of Cadillac’s cost more than a Ford Taurus. Clearly you understand that paying more for a better product has its perks.

But alas, what energy plans really entail is whether or not you can drill here, pipeline there, and fund there. Unfortunately, no president in recent history has truly had the gusto to overhaul the U.S. grid woes (or for that matter infrastructure in general). I would not be surprised if partisan bickering and government ineffectuality led us all to a grid collapse not too dissimilar to that of India. Let us hope we can rally together before then.

As always, for all your energy thoughts and news check into www.energygridiq.com today!
