Wireless Charging

By Keith Heyde

So, I often give electric vehicles a hard time. Silly batteries that take up precious metals, not to mention the ridiculousness of having to plug them, and the range issues, make electric vehicles an easy target for me.

However, there are some technologies out there that are making the case for electric vehicles more enticing. In a recent New York Times article on public bus transportation (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/30/in-italy-electric-buses-wirelessly-pick-up-their-power/) I came across an interesting technology. This technology seems to make the case for electronic vehicles not only mobile, but also practical.

The technology is developed by a company out Weil am Rhein, Germany by Conductix-Wampfler. Essentially, the technology relies upon a wireless charging system to “instantly” refuel electronic fuel cells within busses or other EVs. In the application they have been purchased for, these electronic wireless chargers are used as bus station and top off busses with about 10-15% of a busses total electric capacity. Amazingly, this charge transfer can be done in as little time as it takes for passengers to enter and exit the bus at a given stop.

The conductix-wampfler system is also economical based off of the diesel alternatives. Due to the rising costs of oil fuel, especially in Europe, the conductix system has a payback of only four years. This is astounding especially when we consider that the average life of a public transportation bus is around 12 years.

Usually, novel technologies such as this wireless transfer are adopted at an astoundingly slow pace. They inch along from continent to continent waiting for adoption by politicians who make gambles for political leverage alone. Often, few politicians or city planners are willing to step out on a limb and adopt an untested policy, especially when it has a price tag attached to it.

However, in the case of these wireless-charging stations, the pace of adoption seems to be a bit quicker. Across Europe, conductix-wampfler already has 4 contracts with major municipalities. In addition, their rivals (of similar technologies) have many more.

Yet, what is really promising is how Conductix has opened up communication with Daimler on making the wireless transfer technology available for passenger cars. This would mean that literally every red light would have the potential to be a charging station for electric vehicles. Talk about a range-increase.

Now, I am not saying that this technology has made me pro-EV. Far from it. I still recognize that our predominantly oil infrastructure is far from ready to be electronified. However,  I will say that wireless transfer technology such as this are making the case for a more electronic future very bright.

Thinking of the Frontier

By Keith Heyde

Energy comes has to come from somewhere. That is the irrefutable truth. Whether it is nuclear, solar, coal, or oil, the energy we need to run our infrastructure comes from a source. Some sources, are obviously more accessible or bountiful than others, but they often come at a price. For example, solar energy is now relatively cheap and abundant, however it cannot be stored in an easy and viable way. On the other hand, oil is becoming an increasingly expensive and difficult to attain commodity, yet it provides some serious advantages when it comes to storage and transportation.

It has become increasingly true, that when we analyze the total energy offset associated with energy sources, the decision on what is ‘green’ is not always as easy as it initially seems. For example, I have talked many times about the virtue of appropriate energy selection. For instance, solar for homes makes sense but solar for cars do not. Same with nuclear, etc. With this in mind, many times the associated infrastructure cost with forcing an inappropriate energy solution offsets any of the initial ‘green’ factors. For example, batteries require an immense amount of resources to make and manufacture. Does this offset the use of ‘cleaner’ electricity? Certainly not within any short period of time. And with many items lifetimes decreasing as society moves faster and faster to a disposable commercialized world, does it make sense to opt for electric vehicles in an oil infrastructure?

Now, don’t get me wrong. When it comes to energy I understand that I am a ‘mixed bag’. On the one hand I truly do see the purpose and value of leading a sustainable lifestyle and drawing power from renewable sources. Hell, I have a solar water heater as well as a vegetable garden that I try and eat from every day. However, when it comes to energy on a macro-scale, it is hard to beat hydrocarbons. They are SO easy to store and transport that it is almost silly to even consider another viable energy storage mechanism.

Yet, when it comes to the environment, my thoughts are a bit deeper. I am an ardent conservationist and my personal heroes include Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir. I grew up in the woods and feel uncomfortable anywhere else. I truly see that value and purpose of a frontier and an unconquered. There should be land unclaimed, there should be feats undone. Without that, there is nothing to aspire for, to dream to.

So, when I came across an article in Forbes Magazine entitled Why Environmentalists Should Support Oil Exploration In Alaska’s Artic Waters, I was confused and a bit perplexed. Of course I realize the tradeoff between pursuing easily extracted oil, but I also see the values in keeping some land unclaimed, untapped, and unconquered. How can we rectify this issue effectively?

The article is essentially a synopsis of a book writted by Christopher Helman entitled The Eskimo and The Oil Man. Of course, at first it reminded me of Steven Segall’s seminal work On Deadly Ground (Which if you haven’t seen it you should… if only for the laughs). Yet, after glancing through it, the author Bob Reiss presents many studies and concepts that actually endorse the implimentation of oil drilling in the Northern Slope.  Projections seem to indicate that oil off of the North Slope could be as large as 3 times the amount within the Gulf of Mexico. Yet with the BP oil spill fresh on our minds and, for many people, hearts, can we really justify drilling in yet another ecologically rich system?

Now, I was trained as an Environmental Engineer, and I thought about this a lot. What can we do to tap into such useful and beneficial resources? How much stands to be gained? And at what risk?

I don’t know all of the answers, but the point I arrived at is the following: before we go drilling and ruining the last frontier we have available to us, perhaps we should learn more about the amazingly and beautifully complex system that is the ocean. Only after analyzing the oceanographic beauty that lies beneath us will we be able to truly understand the majesty and might that stands to be lost. Yet, not all of the research needs to be with a negative angle. By learning more about the ocean, we will understand how to better protect it if… no forget that… when another accident occurs. The buffoons behind the BP disaster barely comprehended the magnitude of their blundering mistake. Hopefully, before we go drilling away around the globe, our consequences will be understood, for better or worse.

Green Roof Almanac

By Keith Heyde

Green roofs are not news. In fact, ever since the early 2000’s, green roofs have been spreading across America, and the world, like weeds (no pun intended). A recent editorial in the New York Times (http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/23/in-urban-jungles-green-roofs-bring-relief-from-above/?src=recg) illuminated the spread of green roofs with an interesting analysis. By combining not only quantitative measurement of temperature differences with electrical savings, the piece makes an interesting case for why green roofs, and their less illustrious sister, white roofs, could be an easy and immediate solution to the energy reductions necessary.

However, beyond the number tossing and analysis, the article did shed light on one of the greatest issues with green roofs… there are just so many solutions that are called Green roofs.

The first, and most intuitive green roof is that of the garden. These roofs are coated with vegetation that not only reflect most of the sunlight, but they also use a process known as phototranspiration to cool the roof top surface. Numerous studies have been conducted to measure the effectiveness of these green roofs. When all factors are considered, including the fact that ‘green roofs’ are naturally more effective in the summer, allowing for the winter roofs to maintain a warmer temperature, it was shown that the roughly $15 dollar per square foot price tag for a green roof pays itself back in less than 3 years. This is astounding when we consider that a building ownership cycle is on average 17 years.

Of course, green roofs also clean the air (through photosynthetic processes) and help reduce the burden of urban water flash runoff, not to mention urban heat island.

White roofs are simply roofs painted with white paint. Not a particularly complex idea, but the heat reduction on the roof is astounding, and the option is so cheap that many building owners are flocking to it.

Blue roofs are ponds on the roof. These systems combine the natural cooling capacity of evaporation with a monitored flow to not only help cool but also mitigate storm overflow issues.

And of course, there are our old friends photovoltaic’s that are ‘green’ in the sense that they create a renewable energy source on site. Not too shabby.

However, what The New York Times article fails to present are some of the interesting ‘fushion’ green roof options out there. First up, is algal solar shades. These large sheets of parallel plastic contain floating algae that grown in a small amount of water. Not only does the green algae provide a shaded environment, effectively cooling the building, but it can also be used as a carbon sink or as a source for biofuel stock. Interesting idea, no?

Secondly, there are solar thermal water heaters which not only cool the house but also reduce the electricity or gas bill by mitigating the amount of energy needed for showers, washings, etc.

Finally, we should not forget the possibility of microdesalination facilities on rooftops. Especially in cities such as NYC which have ample access to salt water, desalination through controlled evaporation offers a way to easiliy cool roofs which simultaneously producing a valuable commodity. Of course, NYC is not in a water shortage prone region, but perhaps cities such as LA or San Diego could benefit from this desalination roof even more.

All in all, the option for green roofs are immense. When you have a controlled environment with access to so much solar, and thermal energy, it seems as though you have a situation primed for opportunity. I just hope that more people take advantage of the opportunities atop their buildings.

As always, check back in with www.energygridiq.com for all your energy thoughts and news.
