EIQ Newsflash: 3/22

By Keith Heyde

1) If you want to talk about big fuel consumers, you talk about the United States. If you want to talk about big fuel spenders within the United States, you talk about the Military. Last year the Department of Defense estimated that it spent around 5 billion gallons of fuel. Wow. That’s a cool 13 billion dollars down the drain. This spending is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to issues with dealing with conventional fuel sources in the military. Consider how useful a tank is with no gas… not at all. This leaves fuel caravans exposed to enemy fire, not to mention general dependency on foreign fuel sources. Recently, the D.O.D. published a paper entitled ‘Energy for the Warfighter’ that outlined a shift into more solar and biofuel dependent fuel sources. The concept of having a more portable and agile military has been a shift in recent years that looks to be continued.

2) President Obama went to Nevada today to talk up his ‘all of the above’ energy plan. This program looks to increase the oil and natural production of the U.S. while simultaneously encouraging the growth of alternative fuel sources, specifically solar and biofuel.

3) On Tuesday, the U.S. department of commerce officially imposed tariffs on Chinese. However, the tariffs were much lower than what was expected. Furthermore, they were issued in a tiered system based in the company from China (since there are large public vs private issues w companies in China this does not violate any legal issues).
